‘Hacks’ Star Hannah Einbinder’s Mother Laraine Newman Says ‘F— the Bear’ After Win

Hannah Einbinders mother Laraine Newman has some nice words about The Bear‘s comedy nominations at the 2024 Emmy Awards.

Shortly after The BearLiza Colón-Zayas won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, a category for which Newman’s daughter was also nominated. Tricks — the Saturday Night Live alum shared a short but powerful statement about the FX series being nominated in the comedy category this year.

“F—. THE. BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” she posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

She later deleted the post, replying to a fan: “I deleted it. Not my finest hour.” Instead, she replaced it with a post saying: “I think The Bear is a great show but IMHO it’s not a comedy, not even a black comedy.”

The Bear – starring Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach – led television’s biggest night with 23 Emmy nominations, breaking the record for most nominations for a comedy, originally set by NBC’s 30 Rock in 2009 with 22 nominations.

Critics and fans alike have questioned whether the FX series can truly be considered a comedy, or whether the series would be better suited as a drama due to its sometimes dark subject matter.

Questions about The bear category were also mentioned at the 2023 Emmy Awards, when the show won 10 awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress.

Under Emmy nomination rules, producers can choose which category a show can be nominated in, but they must get final approval from the Academy’s Industry Panel.

The rules also state that for a show to be considered a comedy, “the majority of the (show’s) time” must be “primarily comedic” for at least six episodes in a season. Once a show is placed in a specific category, “all submissions must follow that show’s specific categorization.”

This means that if a show is submitted as a comedy, all awards (for example, acting and directing) must fall into the comedy series category.

“I know some of you may be expecting us to be joking about whether The Bear is actually a comedy,” Eugene joked. “But in the true spirit of The Bear “We don’t joke”

On September 15, Colón-Zayas won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, her first Emmy win ever. She starred opposite Einbinder, Carol Burnett (Palm Royale) And Abbott Elementary’starring Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

In her acceptance speech, she said, among other things: “How could I have imagined that it would be possible to be in the presence of Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett and Janelle and Sheryl Lee Ralph. I love you all, I revere you to the bottom of my heart.”
