Nava Mau isn’t the first transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy, and she certainly won’t be the last.

The Baby reindeer star is nominated in the category Best Supporting Actress in a Short Series, Anthology Series or Movie. This makes her the fourth transgender person to be nominated at the awards ceremony and the first in the category. And the importance of the moment is not lost on her.

“I think what we’re fighting for as a community is to be able to tell stories that come from the heart and that are based on a human foundation,” Nava said. Live from E! host Laverne Coxwho was the first transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy, and who became emotional when speaking to Nava. “Because that’s who we are as transgender people, we’re human first.”

The 32-year-old, who wore a dress designed by RuPaul’s Drag Race star Gigi Goodcontinued: “I think that’s the best thing to celebrate Baby reindeeris that, yeah, it’s an LGBT show, it’s a show with a trans character, and it’s also a really good show. And I’m really proud of that.”
