Live Updates: 76th Emmy Awards; Eugene and Dan Levy Present Nominees ‘Shogun,’ ‘The Bear’ and More

Richard Gadd receives the award for Best Screenplay for a Short Series, Anthology or Film.

Richard Gadd won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Screenplay for a Short Form Series, Anthology or Movie.

Gadd marked the moment with a heartfelt speech, reflecting on his personal experience, and hoping to offer inspiration to those struggling.

Baby Reindeer is a compelling and disturbing tale of stalking, grooming, abuse and artistic license. It was a sensation when it first came out and has been a source of attention ever since. Some of the real actors behind the film dispute the veracity of the story.

Context of the lawsuit: The show is actually the subject of a lawsuit. Netflix said in June that it would fight a multimillion-dollar claim for damages filed by a Scottish woman who claims she was defamed by the hit show and its portrayal of a female stalker.

Fiona Harvey is seeking a jury trial and damages totaling $170 million for “mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life and loss of business,” according to a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The document alleges that the defendants and Gadd told the “biggest lie in television history” by claiming the story was true.

Gadd previously told Britain’s The Guardian that the story was “very emotionally true” but that he wanted the series to exist as a work of art and protect the identities of those involved. However, his repeated pleas for viewers to stop trying to discover the real identities of the characters in his story went unheeded.

In a statement to CNN, a Netflix spokesperson said, “We intend to vigorously defend this case and defend Richard Gadd’s right to tell his story.”

CNN’s Dan Heching and Hilary Whiteman contributed reporting.
