Richard Gadd has won the award for ‘Outstanding Writing’ for a limited series for Baby reindeer.

“No matter how bad it gets, it always gets better,” Gadd said in a powerful acceptance speech. “Keep going and I promise you, everything will be OK.”

As soon as Will Smith’s name was mentioned for Best Screenplay for a Drama Series, everyone wondered if he was going to make a joke about the other Will Smith. Smith did not disappoint: “Despite my name, I come in peace,” he told the audience in Los Angeles.

Smith was of course referring to the Independence Day actor’s infamous punch at the 2022 Oscars. Thankfully, the 2024 Emmys have remained a violence-free event so far.

The Reservation Dogs actor walked the red carpet at the Emmys with a red handprint over his mouth – a symbol of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) movement.

According to Native Hope, the red handprint “represents all the missing sisters whose voices are not heard. It represents the silence of the media and law enforcement in the midst of this crisis.” The site added that it symbolizes “the oppression and subjugation of Native women who are now standing up to say #NoMoreStolenSisters.”

Jessica Gunning wins the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries for Baby reindeer.

Gunning plays Martha, Richard Gadd’s stalker, in this controversial Netflix drama.

“Thank you for trusting me to be your Martha, I will never forget her, you, or this. It really means a lot, so thank you reindeer,” Gunning told Gadd from the stage, referring to her character’s pet name for him.

Dan joked on the show about the nature of Martha’s messages, saying he had received eerily similar messages from his father.

“Let’s host the Emmys. Colin Farrell will be there, do you still have your eye on him?” read a message projected onto the stage behind the presenters.

“Walter O’Keefe joke too mean? Sent from my iPhone,” read another, while a third read: “Best ramen near me.”

“I think you were just Googling that,” Dan joked. “There’s 59,000 more where those came from,” he added, referring to the number of texts the real Martha allegedly sent to Richard Gadd.

Well, this seems to be a theme of the evening. After Selena Gomez, Candice Bergen is the next to ridicule Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance’s comment about “childless cat ladies.”

Speaking about her classic sitcom Murphy BrownBergen said: “In a classic moment, my character was attacked by VP Dan Quayle when Murphy was pregnant and he decided to attack my character because he was a single mother. Nowadays, a candidate would never attack a single mother, so as they say, my work here is done. Meow.”

Ebon Moss-Bachrach wins Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for The Bear and Billy Crudup wins the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for The morning show.
