Donald Trump safe after gunshots ‘near him’

Former President Donald Trump is safe after gunshots were fired “in his vicinity,” his campaign said, following an incident near his Florida golf club on Sunday.

“President Trump is safe,” said Steven Cheung, campaign communications director, adding that there are “no further details at this time.”

The Secret Service confirmed in a message on X that they were investigating a “protection incident” involving Trump that occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. EST (7:00 p.m. BST).

The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed on the incident, which they said took place at the Trump International Golf Course, “where former President Trump was golfing.”

“They are relieved to know he is safe and sound. They are being updated regularly by their team,” the White House said.

The BBC has contacted the US Secret Service and the Trump campaign for more details.

The incident comes almost exactly two months after a gunman tried to assassinate Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, by hitting him in the ear.

In a post on X, Donald Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., said shots were fired at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. He said a suspect had been arrested.

The BBC also contacted the West Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office.

Trump was injured while speaking to a crowd in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13 when a gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired at him from the roof of a nearby building with an AR-15-style rifle.

One bystander was killed in the shooting, while 20-year-old Crooks was killed on the spot by a Secret Service sniper.

The Secret Service watched closely as the Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, gunman opened fire on the former president.

The agency’s director, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned within two weeks of the incident.
