It’s the last Sunday of summer, dear Wordlers. Try to enjoy this last week of the season. And now, fall! I love fall, but I feel like it’s not as long a season as the rest. In many ways, for me at least, fall ends when Halloween is over. November feels more like a different season altogether. December feels like winter. We need more than four seasons to describe it all. Summer, fall, gloom, winter, spring. Something like that.

If you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, my streaming guide is here. There’s a ton of new stuff coming to the myriad of streaming services out there. Next weekend, however, is still jam-packed with new shows.

Anyway, weekend or no weekend, it’s time to solve this Wordle!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot here.

I chose PINES as my opening guess because the local bluegrass festival is named after our beautiful Ponderosa forest and is happening this weekend. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a great opening guess, leaving me with 347 words to choose from. CRATE whittled that down to just 5 and honestly would have been a much better starting guess. Oh well! DECOR was the first thing I could think of at that point, and Wordle Bot told me I should have gone with DECRY. Still, I had only one possible answer at that point: RECUR for the win!

Competitive Wordle Score

0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot, who guessed in only three today. Sigh.

How to Play Wordle Competitively

  • Guess a number 1 and you get 3 points; guess a number 2 and you get 2 points; guess a number 3 and you get 1 point; guess a number 4 and you get 0 points; guess a number 5 and you get -1 point; guess a number 6 and you get -2 points and missing the Wordle gives -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you draw you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily score or just play every day for a new score.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points, positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running count or just play day-to-day. Have fun!

The Etymology of Today’s Wordle

The word “recur” comes from the Latin recurringwhich means “to run back” or “to return”. It is composed of the prefix regarding- (“again” or “back”) and current (“running”). The term entered Middle English via Old French, retaining the sense of something that recurs or happens repeatedly.
