Texas A&M vs. Florida Football: Match Updates, Live Score

play

Texas A&M football takes an early lead against Florida in the first SEC game of the season.

Saturday’s match at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium has been postponed due to weather.

The Aggies are looking for their first SEC win on foreign soil (literally) against a Gators team that crushed Samford after a disappointing Week 1 loss to rival Miami.

Last week, Texas A&M earned its first win of the season against McNeese State, easing the sting of the Aggies’ season-opener loss to Notre Dame. Florida will likely have two quarterbacks on Saturday: six-year veteran Graham Mertz and freshman phenom DJ Lagway.

Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman was listed as questionable and did not start. Marcel Reed started in his place. Lightning delayed the game as the first quarter ended, but play has resumed.

Texas A&M vs. Florida score updates

On 3rd and 5, Reed makes his first real mistake of the day, throwing the ball right at the chest of a Gators defender, who drops an easy interception. It looked like the quarterback expected Muhammad to turn and catch the ball, but the receiver didn’t. Texas A&M settles for a 49-yard field goal, which Randy Bond scores.

Solomon Deshields storms on a 3rd and 11 blitz, tripping Lagway until he eventually goes down for a 15-yard sack. Reed re-enters the field and converts another 3rd down with a pass to Jabre Barber.

Lightning has caused a delay to play at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, with the match being stopped for at least 30 minutes.

It appears the Gators have decided they need to get to work with their freshmen as well, now that Lagway is taking the field.

Florida quarterbacks Graham Mertz over former top recruit and freshman DJ Lagway. The Aggies defense forces a run after Mertz sends a high pass on 3rd-and-13 that Marcus Burke can’t contain.

LeVeon Moss starts the next drive with a 27-yard rush. On another third down, Florida sends a rusher from the secondary who recognizes Reed, and he sends a ball to Amari Daniels that goes 22 yards. The Aggies go for it on 4th-and-5 and Reed’s pass is incomplete. However, a Florida holding call leads to a first down.

Then on 2nd down, Reed throws a dime straight up the seam for a 29-yard run to Melin Ohrstrom. The redshirt freshman has the Gators stunned early.

The backup introduced himself to the Swamp on 2nd-and-21 with a 31-yard run to the Aggies’ 45-yard line. Reed also appeared on 3rd-and-10, completing a pass up the middle to Moose Muhammad III for 20 yards. Then on 3rd-and-13, the senior starter showed his poise, rolling to his right and delivering a 15-yard pass to put the Aggies at the Florida 12-yard line.

Reed reels in another third down conversion for a touchdown that is neutralized by a block and the back. The Aggies settle for a field goal, but the important thing is that Reed looked confident and competent.

Despite quarterback Connor Weigman warming up, Elko opted to go with backup Marcel Reed because Weigman has been battling a persistent shoulder issue. The redshirt freshman is a dual threat quarterback who offers an advantage in the running game. However, Elko indicated that Weigman may eventually get some snaps.
