Oklahoma football vs Tulane live score updates from week 3 game

NORMAN — Oklahoma football gets its final non-conference tuneup before SEC play begins when the 13th-ranked Sooners take on Tulane on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in a game televised on ESPN.

The Sooners (2-0) will be looking to make a midseason comeback after allowing just 249 yards of total offense, their second-worst offensive production in the last decade. OU hopes to get both center Branson Hickman and wide receiver Nic Anderson back for the game.

Tulane’s offense will likely give the Sooners defense a greater challenge than it faced against Temple and Houston. The Green Wave (1-1) has averaged 481.5 yards of offense through two games.

Tulane finally showed some offensive bite after punting on each of their first four drives.

Green Wave quarterback Darian Mensah completed a 19-yard pass to Dontae Fleming on third-and-4 for only Tulane’s second first down of the game. Later in the drive, the Green Wave also picked up a third down.

The Green Wave couldn’t convert on third-and-10 from the 27, but went for it on fourth down until a false start penalty led to a 50-yard field goal by Jacob Barnes.

OU freshman Taylor Tatum caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Arnold with 10:02 left in the first half, putting the Sooners up by two touchdowns.

The Sooners needed less than two minutes to travel 60 yards for the touchdown.

Arnold completed 12 of 17 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Tulane safety Bailey Despanie was ejected for a targeted tackle.

Despanie was initially penalized for a late hit on a 7-yard run by Jackson Arnold, but after review, Despanie was instead penalized for targeting.

After the penalty, Tatum picked up three yards on a run before catching a swing pass from Arnold to extend the Sooners’ lead.

After two previous third-down conversions on the drive, OU was unable to convert another as Jovantae Barnes was unable to handle Jackson Arnold’s swing pass on third-and-6.

The Sooners initially lined up for a 50-yard field goal, but after a delay-of-game penalty, OU instead brought in Luke Elzinga to punt.

Elzinga kicked the ball close to the goal line, pinning Green Wave deep again.

OU’s defense gave up one long pass, but then braced itself and forced Tulane to another run.

The Green Wave has only traveled eight yards so far.

After a long first drive, OU was unable to get much going offensively in the second drive.

The Sooners scored three times and went out, with Luke Elzinga delivering a 43-yard punt to pin the Green Wave at their own 10-yard line.

Review injured the Sooners on their first offensive drive, but then helped them on their next defensive drive.

Officials initially ruled that Tulane had scored a third-and-13, but after review it was decided that the Green Wave was short.

Tulane couldn’t force the Sooners to jump on fourth down, they were given a delay-of-game penalty and went on to score.

Perhaps not everything has been solved with OU’s attack, but the first results are good.

The Sooners were 3-for-3 on third-down conversions, covering 69 yards on 14 plays, and took a 7-0 lead over the Green Wave midway through the first quarter.

The ride took almost six minutes.

Jackson Arnold finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, shortly after completing a 9-yard pass to Deion Burks to set up the scoring.

Arnold was successful 6 of 7 times on the drive. His only incomplete pass came after Burks’ touchdown catch of 16 yards was overturned after it was ruled that Burks had failed to collect himself on the inside line after being forced out of bounds by a Tulane defender.

OU wide receiver Nic Anderson is playing for the first time this season, suggesting he could return for Saturday’s game.

Anderson, who had 10 touchdown catches last year, suffered an injury during practice camp, but Sooners coach Brent Venables said he returned to practice earlier in the week.

Center Branson Hickman, who started the season opener but was quickly injured, has practiced but appears unlikely to play.

Joshua Bates tried to attack quarterback Jackson Arnold early in the warmup, making it likely he would start at center for the second straight time.

The Sooners will be without starting Cheetah Kendel Dolby and cornerback Gentry Williams. Linebacker Dasan McCullough is also among the Sooners in street clothes for the game.
