Aces hold off Fever to complete season win

Chelsea Gray scored a team-high 21 points to help the Las Vegas Aces to a 78-74 win over the Indiana Fever on Friday in Indianapolis.

Kelsey Plum added 18 points, while A’ja Wilson had 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds as the Aces (24-13) won their sixth game in seven tries. Jackie Young added 12 for the Aces.

Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana (19-19) with 20 points, followed by Caitlin Clark’s 18. Aliyah Boston scored 14 and Damiris Dantas scored 11 off the bench for the Fever, who have lost two games in a row. Las Vegas also completed a four-game season sweep of Indiana.

With the Aces leading by eight at halftime, Young connected on a mid-range jumper followed by Gray’s 3-pointer to extend Las Vegas’ lead to 48-35. This forced Indiana to take a timeout with 8:52 left in the third period.

Indiana responded with a 6-0 run after Boston made two jumpers, then Clark hit a layup to cut the Fever’s deficit to 48-41 with 7:40 left.

Later in the quarter, Clark’s three-pointer was tied with Gray’s three-pointer, but Clark would go on to score six of the next eight points in the game, cutting the lead to 56-52 for Las Vegas. The Aces were forced to call a timeout with 2:09 left in the third quarter.

Tiffany Hayes’ layup stopped the bloody action after the timeout, but Clark’s heat check continued with 51 seconds left, delivering another 3-pointer.

Las Vegas led 60-57 entering the final quarter after Gray made a pull-up jumper with 5 seconds left.

Dantas opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to tie the score. Indiana held on to zero until 5:43, when Mitchell’s free throw cut the Fever’s deficit to 65-61.

Indiana fell behind 72-68 with 2:05 left, but Clark cut the gap in half with a layup at 1:48. After Clark missed a go-ahead 3, Plum hit a triple to put the Aces up 75-70 with 56 seconds left.

Dantas hit a jumper from long range with 42.2 seconds left, but Gray’s two free throws decided the game.

In the first quarter, Mitchell’s jumper gave Indiana an 11-10 lead, but Wilson’s mid-range jumper followed by Plum’s triple sparked a 9-0 run for Las Vegas, giving the Aces a 19-13 lead entering the second quarter.

The Aces led 38-32 with 1:00 left, Alysha Clark and Mitchell traded 3-pointers before Wilson hit a hook shot with 13.1 seconds left to give Las Vegas a 43-35 lead at the break.
