‘Just a river through the backyard’: Webster couple deals with the aftermath of flooding

The News10NBC team covers breaking news, traffic and weather.

WEBSTER, NY — Parts of Webster were hit hard by rain Monday afternoon, and News10NBC was there to document the damage. News10NBC’s Eriketa Cost returned to Webster Tuesday morning to see the aftermath.

Areas north of Ridge Road, particularly in West Webster, saw the most damage. A couple on Apple Orchard Lane said their basement has never flooded in the 26 years they’ve lived in the home.

Homeowner Brett Stonewell describes the moment they realized things were serious.

“We started noticing hail… yeah, hail… pea-sized hail. Some of it was the size of a dime, and that got our attention,” Stonewell said. “I said, ‘Man, let’s check it out.’ And I looked out, and the lawn was an inch or two deep. And we don’t get no water here, period! Just no, and then the next thing you know, there was just a river running through the backyard. I went down to look, and I found a section of that wall that had collapsed, and the rest was history.”

Stonewell said he’s been talking to neighbors all day about it. Some people had sewer problems or sinkholes. The couple is thankful it wasn’t worse.

Stonewell said insurance would not help cover the damage and he had to pay for Jet Dry services out of pocket.

The City of Webster does not work directly with homeowners. Crews from the Public Works Department have been clearing portions of Hojack Trail throughout the day.
