Chappell Roan made no secrets as she geared up for her first MTV VMAs.

The 26-year-old “Good Luck, Babe!” singer brought her epic style to the New York City red carpet on Sept. 11 — and she brought it medieval style. She stepped out in a sheer, flowing Y/Project gown with a mint green cape. She wore thigh-high boots underneath.

Her accessories perhaps made the dress stand out — she wore a sword and metal cuffs on each wrist, as well as a large cross necklace and more jewels. She also wore extra-long nails for added drama.

She wore her red hair in romantic curls swept back from her face and was accompanied by a knight in matching attire. Her glamour was dark and vampy with smokey eyes and dark red lipstick.

For her first-ever VMAs, Roan is nominated for Best New Artist. She’s up against Benson Boone, Gracie Abrams, Shaboozey, Teddy Swims and Tyla. She’ll also perform at the show. Also performing are Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello and Katy Perry, who will take home the Video Vanguard Award.

“Katy is a musical giant and a true pop culture icon,” said Bruce Gillmer, Paramount’s president of music, musical talent, programming and events and chief content officer for music at Paramount+, in a statement.

He added: “With her groundbreaking creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon, conquering the world’s biggest stages. Katy’s prowess will be on full display LIVE at the VMAs with an unmissable, career-spanning performance celebrating her greatest moments and chart-topping hits.”

Roan has become known for her boundary-pushing fashion choices on stage. At this year’s Governors Ball in New York, she dressed as the Statue of Liberty. She told the audience she was “in drag” as the monument because Lady Liberty is “the greatest queen of them all,” before quoting the poem etched on the Statue of Liberty.

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free,” she quoted part of the poem, before explaining the words in her opinion, in a video shared on TikTok by Rolling Stone.

“That means freedom for trans rights, that means freedom for women’s rights… and most of all it means freedom for all oppressed people in occupied territories,” she said after becoming visibly emotional.
