Fracking for natural gas in Pennsylvania was the subject of much attention during Tuesday night’s presidential debate at the National Constitution Center in Old City, especially considering how little influence a president has when it comes to oil and gas drilling in the state.

In such a close presidential race, Pennsylvania will be a closely fought swing state. So of course we have to talk about fracking.

Former President Donald Trump is all for it, and during Tuesday’s debate he claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris is not.

“And she will never allow fracking in Pennsylvania. If she wins the election, fracking in Pennsylvania will stop on day one,” Trump said.

Harris, who supported a ban on fracking when she first ran for president in 2019, reversed her stance when she joined President Joe Biden as his running mate for vice president.

She reiterated her current position during Tuesday’s debate, in response to a question about her changing position on the issue.

“Let’s talk about fracking because we’re in Pennsylvania,” she said. “I made that very clear in 2020. I will not ban fracking. I did not ban fracking as vice president of the United States.”
