Trump says Taylor Swift will pay a price for Harris’ support

The Trump campaign had a nightmare of a night on Tuesday. The former president stumbled during his debate against Kamala Harris, and — to rub salt in the wound — another woman Trump loves to hate also made it clear she won’t be giving him any mercy.

Shortly after the debate ended, Taylor Swift announced her support for Harris in a lengthy Instagram post, criticizing Trump and his campaign for distributing AI-generated images that appear to show her support for the former president.

Trump is not happy.

As he often does when he’s angry, Trump called Fox News on Wednesday morning.

“Well, I actually like Ms. Mahomes a lot better,” Trump said when asked what he thought of Swift’s endorsement, referring to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany Mahomes, who has recently become the center of controversy after liking several pro-Trump comments and posts on social media.

“I was not a fan of Taylor Swift,” Trump added. “It was just a matter of time. You couldn’t possibly support Biden. But she’s a very liberal person, she always seems to support a Democrat — and she’s probably going to pay a price for that in the marketplace.”

While Trump tried to ignore the endorsement, the former president has for months been fixated on the possibility that the influential superstar would publicly endorse President Joe Biden and later Harris.

In January, allies close to the former president said Rolling Stone that Trump was planning a “holy war” against Swift if she endorsed one of his 2024 rivals, and privately boasted that he was “more popular” than the entertainer. The singer was at the center of a culture war at the time over her relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Prominent allies of the former president even went so far as to suggest that the 2023 NFL season was rigged to allow the Chiefs to endorse Biden through Swift.

In the intervening months — with Biden dropping out of the race after his own failed debate performance — politicians have waited with bated breath to see whether Swift would endorse Harris.

Independent Swifties groups organized massive digital meetups in support of Harris. Swifties for Kamala has amassed more than 165,000 followers across its social media platforms, and the Harris campaign was more than happy to welcome them into the fold.

In contrast, the Trump campaign has tried to make it appear that Swift would endorse him. Last month, the former president shared a collage of AI-generated images that purported to show young women wearing “Swifties for Trump” shirts.

“I accept!” Trump wrote in the caption. The former president later claimed he “knew nothing about them, except that someone else generated them. I did not generate them.”

The incident was apparently the final straw for Swift, who wrote Tuesday night that she “was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential campaign had been posted on his site. It really raised my fears about AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It made me conclude that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter.”

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election. I am voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes that I believe need a warrior to defend,” Swift added.

Sorry, Donald, there was a blank space next to Taylor’s recommendation, and she wrote Kamala’s name.
