Donald Trump was already struggling on Tuesday with a debate performance that was panned by Democrats and Republicans alike, and then perhaps the most famous person on the planet jumped in to support his opponent, Kamala Harris.

“I’m voting for (Harris) because she’s fighting for the rights and causes that I believe need a warrior to defend,” Swift wrote in an Instagram post minutes after the presidential debate ended on Tuesday. “I think she’s a determined, talented leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we’re led by calm and not chaos.”

Asked Wednesday morning about Swift’s support for the Democratic nominee, Trump tried to brush it off, telling Fox News that he prefers Swift’s good friend Brittany Mahomes over the singer.

“I actually like Mrs. Mahomes a lot better if you want to know the truth,” Trump said. “She’s a big Trump fan. I was not a Taylor Swift fan.”

He continued: “It was just a matter of time. … You couldn’t possibly support Biden. Look at Biden — you couldn’t support him. But she’s a very liberal person. She always seems to support a Democrat, and she’ll probably pay a price for that … in the marketplace. But no, I liked Brittany.”

Let’s take a closer look at that.

It’s no secret why Trump wanted to draw Fox News viewers’ attention to Brittany Mahomes, best known as the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. She’s made headlines in recent weeks for her open support of Trump. The outsized interest in Mahomes’ politics this year likely stems from her close friendship with Swift, who supported Biden in 2020 and now Harris in 2024. (Swift began hanging out with Mahomes around the same time she began dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce last year.)

But there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between Swift and Mahomes. The pair were spotted making out in New York City over the weekend at the US Open.

Trump told Fox News that he was “not a fan of Taylor Swift.” He had appeared to be one in the past. He tweeted in 2012 that he was “happy to hear” she would be hosting a Grammy nomination special. “Taylor is amazing!” he wrote. And he apparently felt so invested in Swift’s personal life that he felt the need to comment on one of her previous relationships that same year.

Next in Trump’s terse response to Swift’s rejection is his statement that she “couldn’t possibly” have supported Biden. Well, he’s on the right track; it would have been odd for her to have supported someone who wasn’t running.

As for his “marketplace” prediction, only time will tell if Swift loses fans over her endorsement. But her 2020 endorsement of Biden didn’t seem to hurt her career — she’s arguably more popular today than ever before. And a 2023 Morning Consult poll found that a majority of Swift’s fans skew Democratic.
