The rumor of a sequel to ‘The Goonies’ is the latest example of fans’ ‘never give die’ passion

The film may have hit theaters in 1985, but the passion fans have for the Oregon-set adventure “The Goonies” is an example of the film’s “never say die” tagline. For years, “Goonies” fans have been eagerly awaiting a sequel. The latest example of that interest is a rumor circulating online that the long-awaited sequel is finally happening.

The rumor is based on a story in the US Sun, the American edition of the British tabloid The Sun. As the description in the US Sun says, it serves “News, sports, celebrities and gossip.”

A headline in the US Sun reads: “The classic 80s blockbuster The Goonies is getting a SEQUEL starring many of the original actors.”

Wow! Sounds exciting! Where did this information come from? According to the article, “A source said: ‘The Goonies’ reboot has been discussed for a long time, but it has finally been given the green light to move forward.”

The anonymous source then claims, “The plan is to start developing ideas for the sequel next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027” and “It is likely that big stars will return, but the possibilities for where the sequel goes are endless.”

Cool! So who is this source again? Who knows? The article doesn’t give any further details about who this gabby individual might be. And to make this all sound a bit vague, the report doesn’t come from reputable sources in the entertainment industry, like The Hollywood Reporter or Variety.

But that hasn’t stopped other media outlets, such as the New York Post, from sharing the news.

It’s all a sign of how eager “The Goonies” fans are for news of a possible sequel. Oregonians certainly know that “Goonies” fans are legion, as tourists regularly flock to Astoria and other North Coast spots where the movie was filmed on location.

The rumor of a sequel isn’t the only example of how projects similar to the “Goonies” series are generating interest.

In early 2020, for example, entertainment industry websites reported on a potential TV series about children who set out to create a shot-for-shot remake of “The Goonies,” and a teacher who agrees to help them realize their dream.

As The Hollywood Reporter reported, the Fox network ordered a pilot for the drama series.

In December 2021, Variety reported that Fox had shelved the project, “deeming it too young for the network.” But what was then called “Our Time” was redeveloped at Disney Plus. “The Donner Company and Amblin, who were behind the original, are back on board,” the article said. That project, however, has not yet come to fruition.

In another example of how the “Goonies” nostalgia never ends, actor Josh Gad posted a video to his YouTube channel in April 2020 reuniting original cast members Sean Astin (Mikey), Josh Brolin (Brand), Martha Plimpton (Stef), Kerri Green (Andy), Jeff Cohen (Chunk), Ke Huy Quan (Data) and Corey Feldman (Mouth).

Also in attendance for the reunion were actors Joe Pantoliano and Robert Davi, who played the Fratelli brothers in the film, director Richard Donner (who died in 2021), executive producer Steven Spielberg, Cyndi Lauper and screenwriter Chris Columbus, who asked Gad about writing the film, which is set “in the most exciting action-adventure setting of them all, Oregon.”

As The Oregonian/OregonLive reported, when asked about a sequel, Spielberg said it had been discussed, but the creative team couldn’t find a better idea than the original.

Meanwhile, another site known for its gossip-laced approach, The Daily Mail, has reported that some “Goonies” fans aren’t too crazy about the idea of a sequel. In an article headlined “Goonies fans all make same impassioned plea after sequel announcement sends social media into meltdown,” The Daily Mail cites posts on X, which share thoughts like, “‘The Goonies’ is getting a sequel. I can’t express how much I hate this”; “Don’t even dare reboot ‘The Goonies’! Don’t even touch it. That movie is timeless!”; and another who wrote, “But the whole appeal of ‘Goonies’ is a bunch of kids going on an adventure with a treasure map. It’s something we all imagined as kids. When it turns into a bunch of weird or obese adults going back to retrieve hidden treasure to pay their bills, it loses its magic.”
