Boy shot at Omaha Northwest High School; Suspect arrested, parents rush to crime scene

A teenage boy was taken to an Omaha hospital in critical condition Tuesday after a shooting at Northwest High School, police said.

Parent: ‘I jumped in the car and drove there’

13:21 | Devon DeMott ran from his home, a few blocks away, to school after his son Tyler, a sophomore, texted him saying there had been a shooting and the school was on lockdown.

When he heard about the lockdown, DeMott ran from his home, which was a few blocks away, to the school.

“I jumped in the car as a father and drove over there,” he said.

He said he’s been in touch with Tyler.

DeMott was grateful for the Omaha police’s quick response to the shooting.

‘The classrooms are closed’

1:00 PM | Omaha Public Schools posted this on their website at 1:00 p.m.: “Northwest High remains in lockdown. The Omaha Police Department has confirmed a shooting on or near our campus with one reported victim. First responders and law enforcement continue to work the scene, which they believe is now secure.

During a lockdown, all classrooms are closed, the lights are off and students are not visible through the hallway windows.

Police have established a perimeter around the school campus. While we know there is no place families would rather be than with their student, we are asking families to avoid campus and wait for guidance as we learn more.

We will continue to communicate every 30 minutes via email and ops.org/alerts.”

Streets closed

12:50 pm | World-Herald reporters at the scene reported a heavy police presence, who had cordoned off streets near the school.

Crime scenes were cordoned off at all entrances to the campus and onlookers gathered on the sidewalks surrounding the school.
