Video: Accused Apalachee High School shooter, father questioned by Jackson County deputies

New developments have emerged in last week’s deadly shooting at Apalachee High School. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has released bodycam footage from an interview last year with suspected shooter Colt Gray and his father, Colin Gray. Both are facing charges in connection with the killing.

The footage, recorded in 2023, shows detectives questioning the father and son about an online threat to shoot up a high school. Sheriff Janis Mangum, who has expressed remorse, insists her office’s investigation found no evidence to support the claim that Colt threatened his school.

The FOX 5 I-Team has learned that the tip was passed on to the FBI, which passed it on to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Mangum noted that her office notified area schools, but questions remain about whether any action was taken.

While Sheriff Mangum expresses some remorse, she continues to stand by the investigation, maintaining that her investigator could not prove that Colt Gray had threatened his school.

In the video, Colt Gray, then a high school student in Jackson County, can be seen shuffling on his feet with a shorter haircut as he answers questions from investigators. The investigator discussed with Colin Gray the challenges Colt faced, including being bullied at school and his access to firearms, even though ammunition was reportedly out of reach at the time.

Colt denied making any threats and claimed that his gaming app account, where the alleged threat was posted, had been hacked. Nevertheless, legal experts expect the interview to play a key role in the prosecution of Colin Gray. The teen’s grandfather revealed that Colin gave him an AR-15-style rifle as a Christmas present seven months after the interview.

More disturbing details have emerged, including a report from The Washington Post that Colt’s mother contacted a counselor at the high school minutes before the shooting, concerned about a comment her son had made that morning about a school shooting. A school official reportedly checked on the wrong student.

The 2023 interview with the sheriff’s office is now seen in retrospect as a missed opportunity to intervene. Former Jackson County Sheriff’s Captain Dale Dillow later emailed the FBI indicating that the sheriff’s office had alerted area schools and would be monitoring Colt. However, Sheriff Mangum now admits that there is no documentation to confirm that this alert was actually passed on to the schools.

Last week, the FOX 5 I-Team obtained an email from the Jefferson City Schools superintendent indicating that the school system was unaware of any online threats and that there was no evidence of an investigation.

“I support the investigation. My regret is the school. If there was a disturbance at the school that wasn’t reported, then of course I regret that,” Sheriff Mangum said. “But as far as the investigation at that time, there was nothing to substantiate the allegations.”

The Jackson County School District, a separate entity from Jefferson City Schools, also confirmed that it never received a warning about Colt Gray.

As for Dillow, who assured her the matter had been addressed, he was later fired in 2023 for an unrelated incident. Sheriff Mangum acknowledged that regardless of what happened, the responsibility ultimately lies with her as sheriff.
