49ers News: 3 Quick Takeaways From 32-19 Win Over Jets

The San Francisco 49ers made a bold statement to kick off the 2024 season with a resounding 32-19 victory over the New York Jets at Levi’s Stadium. Their performance was a display of dominance on both sides of the ball, and set the bar high for the season ahead.

The 49ers offense was a force to be reckoned with, scoring on eight straight possessions and relying on their run game to break the coveted 30-point barrier. This offensive dominance was truly impressive.

Defensively, San Francisco limited the return of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, forcing two turnovers and slowing the Jets’ offense.

Here are three quick takeaways from the 49ers’ 32-19 win over the Jets on Monday.

Trench game

One of the biggest lessons I learned before the game was that there has to be pressure, as both teams had great defenses with top players who were able to control quarterback Nick Bosa and Quinnen Williams.

Early in the game, it appeared the 49ers’ offensive line would be in trouble, as right tackle Colton McKivitz and center Jake Brendel were both beaten on third downs, ending their respective drives.

I was impressed with the unit throughout the game, though. The 49ers posted a 96.1 percent pass block win rate Monday night, with clean sheets from Trent Williams and Aaron Banks.

Quarterback Brock Purdy was given ample time to execute his plays as the 49ers’ offensive line showcased its prowess. This allowed Purdy to settle in after a rusty start, ultimately amassing 231 passing yards while completing 65.5 percent of his throws.

Additionally, the ground blocking was stellar for running back Jordan Mason, as 94 of the running back’s 147 yards came before contact, which equates to a very impressive 3.35 yards per carry. And when you add in Mason’s sheer physicality, you get 5.3 yards per carry on an insane volume.

Defensively, the 49ers were able to disrupt the Jets’ tempo, although the overall pressure wasn’t elite. They only got to Aaron Rodgers once, but the front four made key plays in the game that disrupted the Jets’ quarterback’s tempo. This success should give confidence in the 49ers’ defensive capabilities.

More importantly, San Francisco was great against the run, allowing Breece Hall to collect just 54 yards on 16 attempts, leaving New York one-dimensional.

Both fronts were crucial in this game and the 49ers won on both ends of the field, leading to a productive victory.

The hitting on the rock

The first game of the NFL season usually doesn’t look great and the 49ers certainly have some improving to do, but this was an impressive start to the year for San Francisco on more than one level.

The most obvious positive from the game was running back Jordan Mason, who finally got his chance to break out and ran with it (both literally and figuratively), accounting for 147 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. To make matters even better, Mason also caught a pass out of the backfield for a first down.

It felt like we all knew Mason was capable of this kind of performance, given his hard-hitting style of rushing and the 49ers’ ability to make things happen on the ground. But the running back had to wait for his chance, and it wasn’t until the first game of his third season that he made his first career start.

Mason consistently managed 5+ yards, putting the 49ers’ passing game in favorable situations and helping quarterback Brock Purdy settle in from the second quarter onward.

And he was able to handle 28 carries, the most a Kyle Shanahan back has carried in a game since arriving in San Francisco. That includes the days of Raheem Mostert, rookie Elijah Mitchell and Christian McCaffrey.

The 49ers made the move to anoint Mason as their No. 2 running back this offseason, and in one game, the move certainly paid off.

The question now is: How involved will Mason be when McCaffrey returns? And does Mason’s addition allow the 49ers to treat the star’s injury with even more caution going into the season?

Money moody

The 49ers started the game with a three-and-out, making it seem like the game would be more of a defensive battle than a shootout.

From that point on, San Francisco was unstoppable, with the offense scoring eight straight goals and finishing with 32 points.

Of those eight drives, however, six were of 50+ yards, creating a flurry of opportunities for sophomore kicker Jake Moody.

Moody’s stats that night? 6/6 on field goals and 2/2 on extra points, for a total of 20 points.

The kicker struggled in a few games last year, but he finished 20th in the NFL in kicking percentage, raising questions about how quickly he could develop for the 49ers.

Well, in Week 1, Moody got the attention and delivered time and time again. Head coach Kyle Shanahan even said he’s never had more confidence in a 50-plus yard kicker.

Now, the offense can’t settle for six field goals a week. They were just 2/5 in the red zone, while narrowly missing outside the zone for three other field goals. Some of those chances need to be converted into touchdowns.

But considering it’s Week 1 and San Francisco has scored on eight straight drives, you’ll appreciate the results. Especially when you consider that Moody converted all six of his field goal attempts, even kicking the ball in with the help of the goalpost.

Productive game for Moody and the 49ers.
