NFL Fans Claim Overtime Is ‘Gay’ After Sunday Night Football

NFL fans — and by no means all of them — took to social media Sunday night to voice their opinions on overtime and the National Football League’s overtime rules. Some of them jumped right into the anti-gay and homophobia nonsense.

The NFL’s first Sunday Night American Football game of the 2024 season was a thrilling contest, with the Detroit Lions defeating the Los Angeles Rams.

Of course, there were also idiot fans who said stupid things about the NFL’s overtime rules and other nonsense.

The NFL’s overtime rules have long been a topic of debate.

This latest attack is of course a clear attempt to link something that is unpopular among a handful of people to homosexuals.

Success.

For a couple of decades, the league had a sort of sudden-death overtime rule, meaning the opening possession of overtime was arguably more important than, say, the NBA.

In 2010, the NFL said that a field goal on the first possession of overtime could not end the game. Various contrivances have been devised over the past decade or so. The latest is some playoff-only nonsense, where every team is guaranteed possession of the ball in overtime no matter what.

Apparently this is as cheerful as a picnic basket full of different types of cheese and a free chardonnay.

The two teams are still led by the two boys who previously led the other team.

Matthew Stafford won a Super Bowl championship with the Rams after throwing passes for the Lions for years. Jared Goff was also the Lions QB who played for the Rams. The two were part of the same NFL trade. So far, it seems like the LA fans are the better for it, as the Rams won a Super Bowl title with Stafford at the helm.

Still, Goff has improved his numbers since switching teams. He threw three more touchdowns — 78 — in his first three seasons with the Lions, and nine fewer interceptions, than Stafford threw with the Rams.

Still, the Super Bowl ring that Stafford is wearing – with a very strong defense and supporting team – has to hurt Goff.

Now some fans are complaining about the rules surrounding overtime, which are aimed at choosing a winner in a match in which the players have been playing against each other for around three hours.

Gay or not, the current overtime rules are appreciated by many people, who don’t like it when a professional match ends in a draw.

Think of it this way: unlike soccer, teams don’t line up to score a goal to decide a draw.
