John Harris has 12 key notes from the Houston Texans’ Week 1 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

8) Sprint Left Option for the win! Good day to get the three big receivers involved, but again, the Colts couldn’t stop Nico Collins. In the last three games against the Colts, two of them at Lucas Oil Stadium

Week 2, 2023 – 7 for 146 yards and a TD

Week 18, 2023 – 9 for 195 yards and a TD

Week 1, 2024 – 6 for 117 yards

Three straight games against the Colts, three 100-yard performances. Total of 22 catches for 458 yards and two TDs. Just unbelievable. And then there’s the catch on 3rd-and-11 on the last drive. Are you kidding me? He and CJ Stroud have been in sync all training camp and that’s what that completion was all about. I thought exactly like some Texans fans did – Nico is going to be the TY Hilton for the Colts that TY always was for us.

9) Oh, okay, let me get into this. The Colts have a ceremonial anvil hammer person to start every game. So, the Colts brought in Hilton on Sunday to do it. He hammered the anvil once, twice, three times or something and then started raising his arms toward the crowd. Then he turned around…AND PUT ON THE FREAKIN’ CLOWN MASK. Then the Texans clowned the Colts, for the most part.

10) During this offseason, so many people asked me about the interior defense. Some of the die-hard fans got mad at me, like I was making the decisions. “YOU DIDN’T DO ENOUGH, JOHN!” I mean, seriously, that’s what a lot of fans said to me. But as training camp went on, I saw Folorunso Fatukasi and Mario Edwards Jr. make play after play. As much as I tried to tell people not to freak out, that this IDL group was better than they expected, I was met with pushback everywhere. Okay, now what? Sure, it’s one game, but both of those sacks came courtesy of those two interior dudes. They both had a TFL. They both had a sack. They both had a QB hurry, the only two of them that day. Look, it may not be perfect, but do you believe what it could be?

11) How good was #7 on Sunday? The throwback to Nico across the field on third down in the third quarter. The throw to Nico on 3rd down late in the fourth quarter. Dots and dimes all day. How about the throw to Brevin Jordan off Stroud’s knees in the first quarter. He was under pressure the entire first half with three sacks, but only had one in the second half. Even under that pressure he kept making clutch throw after clutch throw. Just ridiculous and we are so lucky to have that guy as our QB and leading this team.

12) Speaking of clutch, how about Kai’mi Fairbairn? Not one, not two, but three 50+ yard field goals in the opener. HUGE CLUTCH! ESPN superstar Adam Schefter tweeted/posted later in the day that Fairbairn and Rice University alumnus Chris Boswell became the first two kickers in NFL history to kick THREE 50-yard field goals in a regular season opener. Schefter also noted that it was the first time multiple kickers had kicked three 50-yard field goals in the same week. History, baby! And it could have been FOUR for Kai’mi had the end of the half not been so shaky.

Okay, that’s it for the Harris Hits from the first time I watched this game. I’m going to rewatch the game tape and have more thoughts on All-Access radio this week. See you then, everyone!
