Information sought regarding ‘suspicious’ fires in Ninemile area

MISSOULA — Authorities are seeking information about a series of wildfires west of Missoula that are being treated as “suspicious.”

Firefighters from the Ninemile Ranger District of the Lolo National Forest and the Frenchtown Rural Fire District (FRFD) responded to three fires in the same area this weekend.

According to a press release, the fires were all burning approximately seven miles northwest of Ninemile and half a mile north of Ninemile Road in the Lolo National Forest area.

The Kennedy Fire was reported early Monday morning. The fire is estimated to be 16 acres in size. Firefighters have set up a bulldozer line around the perimeter and are continuing to improve containment.

The Ninemile Road Fire was reported Sunday morning and has been contained to 1.32 acres. Firefighters were able to get a bulldozer line around the perimeter and lay down hoses to aid in the cleanup.

The Kreis Fire was reported Saturday night and is currently estimated at 28.3 acres with a bulldozer line surrounding it. A helicopter was used for two fuel cycles to help stop forward spread. The initial attack took place Saturday night with assistance from the FRFD.

Anyone with information about the fires or suspicious activity in the area is encouraged to contact Forest Service Law Enforcement at 406-329-4814.
