Why the Seahawks gave us hope after Sunday’s win (and why we’re not so sure)

That was fun, right?

After giving up two safeties and two turnovers in the first half, the Seahawks settled down and went on to win Sunday’s season opener against the Broncos.

And that’s exactly what we like about it.

The Seahawks trailed Denver 13-9 after a forgettable first half. The blunders could have turned this game into quicksand.

It was just the opposite.

Seattle went deep in that second half. The mistakes stopped. Kenneth Walker III broke loose for big runs while Geno Smith found his receivers at will.

The reaction, frankly, was everything.

“I just wanted a little bit of adversity there,” Mike Macdonald said playfully of the first-half woes. “Yeah, I’m going to clean up all that mess in the first half too. I’ll tell you what, on the sideline with our crew, the guys were calm. Nobody batted an eyelid. We knew what we had to do to win the game, stuck to the plan, made some adjustments and just kept playing. It’s a long game. These games are 60 minutes to the end.

“Proud of our guys and the effort and the attitude, the camaraderie. I thought they played really hard, so I’m proud of the guys. There’s a lot of things we want to address clearly this coming week to prepare for New England, and we’re going to do that. Hopefully we can make a big leap from Game 1 to Game 2.”

That’s what we’re talking about, it gives us hope. Week 1 is so hard to be at your best. Some teams are. You could argue that the Seahawks were in the third quarter, but there’s always a lot of variables when it comes to these kinds of things.

So the Hawks orchestrating a complete turnaround in the first game of the season? That gives us hope for what could happen. That’s not to say we’re predicting the Super Bowl or a bust, but you have to love a team that rallies to make sure their new coach wins his first game. You can see the chemistry with this team already.

Since you have no idea how the season will go, you need to make the most of the first match:

  • The whole team corrected their mistakes in the second half
  • Clutch performances were found everywhere. Who can forget Tyler Lockett’s huge catch that effectively decided the game?
  • The Seahawks scored 17 straight points, confirming their dominance and showing us what they can do
  • The defense was excellent and did not allow a single touchdown until the final minutes of the game

The title of this story is: “And why we’re not so sure about that yet.”

I think you have to say that because it’s only September and week 1. Anything can still happen.

However, it seemed like the Denver Broncos were still struggling mightily to find their way. Maybe they will, after all, it was rookie quarterback Bo Nix’s first game, but at times it seemed like the Seahawks were lucky to be down by only a small margin. Perhaps the game would have gotten out of hand early on if they had been a stronger team.

So there is understanding for fans who may be hesitant because of the opponent’s problems and the amount of mistakes Seattle made in the first half.

For now? Take the win. The Mike Macdonald era started well, and that’s something no one can change. The Seahawks have proven they can bounce back quickly, and there’s no reason to suspect that will stick.

It’s only one game, but this team embodies the tough nature of its head coach and it was fun to watch. It’s intriguing to see what can happen as the season progresses.
