DETROIT — As the official host of Michigan State men’s basketball games and the NBA G-League’s Motor City Cruise, Terrance Grantham, aka TG The Host, has experienced his fair share of lively fan scenes.

But the tailgate scene at Eastern Market (EM) for the Detroit Lions-Los Angeles Rams season opener was unlike anything he’d ever seen.

“I love seeing the city come together like this, man,” Grantham told MLive. “All walks of life, everyone coming together to celebrate this Lions team. Listen, I’m 32 years old, so you do the math. We’ve never been able to celebrate the Lions like this in my entire life. So now it’s different to celebrate, to tailgate, to watch and expect to win — and really have the confidence that we’re going to win.”

Grantham’s description perfectly sums up the vibe of the EM tailgate.

As usual, there were barbecues and hibachi grills in every corner, accompanied by games of hacky sack. Marching bands played the NFL on Fox theme, rowdy kids — yes, kids — were decked out in face paint and Lions chains, and yes, there were even a few Rams fans in the mix.

There were tailgates throughout downtown, pop-up restaurants and fans milling about the Woodward corridor, all dressed in Honolulu blue, reflecting the festive atmosphere of the Detroit Tigers’ opening day, an unofficial holiday in Michigan.

When asked if he thought the Lions’ season opener could rival the Tigers’ opening game, Grantham was confident.

“100 percent,” he said. “I think the only thing that makes it a little different is the weather. Opening Day is in the spring and you never know what the weather is going to do. With the Lions home game in the fall, it’s just as unpredictable. But when our teams win, our fans are die-hard, unconditional. It doesn’t matter. We’re out there.”

One of the fans at the Eastern Market tailgate was Dr. DeLorean Griffin, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon with a practice in Metro Detroit.

Griffin, like Grantham, has been a lifelong Lions fan and was surprised by the energy on Sunday afternoon.

“This is a different feeling than previous years,” Griffin said. “I mean, last year was electric, but we’re going to continue that momentum and build on it.”

“(Lions coach) Dan Campbell is going to do his thing, and we’re going to keep going for it on fourth downs.”

The Lions-Rams season opener at Ford Field starts at 8:20 p.m.
