Best and worst of week 2

play

The fourth year of American football senior season got off to a bang last week, promising plenty of crazy stuff and antics throughout the year.

The same applies to last season’s assessment: only the most exceptional performances are rewarded and failing grades cannot be reversed.

MORE: American Football Winners and Losers in Week 2

Last week’s highest marks went to the return of college football, and the worst marks went to whoever organized Minnesota’s fireworks display, which went off at the end of the game against North Carolina after a missed field goal.

Here’s the Week 2 analysis on how fans, teams, players, and coaches fared:

Trolls of the reigning national champions

Michigan finally won a national championship last season, nearly three decades after its last title triumph. Maize-and-blue-wearing fans remind people of that every chance they get by talking about it ad nauseam, as if the new season hasn’t even started yet, because it will dull the pain of what’s likely to come. This isn’t Georgia, Alabama or a handful of other programs reloading with talent like it’s nobody’s business. That’s especially true at quarterback.

But it starts with Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore, who for some reason wanted to reassure people about his job status after nine months at the helm.

“I’m committed to Michigan, they’re committed to me. I’m getting paid and I have a contract,” Moore said of reports that he was working without a signed contract.

Glad to hear the checks are being processed in Ann Arbor, as fans have been asking for his job.

The Internet, still undefeated, couldn’t wait to beat the Wolverines after they got blown off their home court by Texas.

For most of the afternoon, hashtags were trending on social media that did not paint a positive picture of Michigan. When #cheaters, #orji, #daviswarren, #sharronemoore are mixed with jokes about “alleged” sign thief Connor Stalions, chances are your day did not go so well.

Christmas in September, Part IV

This space has been used for the past four years to expose the shameful spending of sports departments, who are willing to give away millions to prove they have the money.

Because Notre Dame wants to ensure a chance at a playoff spot every year, the football program refuses to join a conference. That means they have to shell out big bucks to please the home crowd and schedule some less-than-appealing opponents.

Let’s rewind to 2022, when the Irish paid Marshall $1.25 million to travel to South Bend, only to be defeated 26-21. This time around, Northern Illinois will be looking for that seven-figure straight-ticket cash over the next 60 days after the 28-point underdog Huskies defeated Notre Dame 16-14 for their first top 10 win in school history.

Miami (Ohio) can look forward to a $1.25 million payout when the team comes to town on September 21.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney with what he thinks is a description for the media.

“You’re all going to write shit, you’re all going to write terrible things. And if we do great, you’re all going to write great things. That’s okay.”

Western Illinois near Indiana

This beauty needs no words (send me a picture on social media to promote your pup).

Now to the game:

What can you buy for $450,000 these days?

In New York City, you could buy a 500-square-foot apartment with it and have just enough money left over to buy a pack of Skittles at the local grocery store.

Western Illinois was paid that amount to take the pups to Bloomington, Indiana, to play the Hoosiers. It meant a 77-3 defeat and a five-hour bus ride home to think about what the hell happened during those three hours on Friday night.

To answer that question… Well, not much for Western Illinois.

The Leathernecks have now lost 26 games in a row, which is by far the longest losing streak in Division I. Indiana set school records for most points in a game and total offense with 703 yards.

While the pups napped during halftime, let’s hope the Leathernecks can pull out a win when they play Illinois State next week. The Redbirds have the unfortunate distinction of being the last team to lose to Western Illinois, a 38-31 loss on October 30, 2021.
