Luis Diaz scores closing equaliser as 5 Liverpool players feature in international fixtures – Liverpool FC

Luis Diaz continued his scoring streak with a goal for Colombia on a night when four other Liverpool players were in international action.

It was a busy Friday of international matches for five Liverpool players, including a home debut for Welshman Lewis Koumas under the guidance of former Liverpool player Craig Bellamy.

As is so often the case, Diaz sprang into action when Colombia needed him most.

Liverpool’s number 7 started the match but Colombia found themselves 1-0 down after 62 minutes when Peru’s Alexander Callens made a fine save from a cross.

With James Rodriguez and Yerry Mina both on the field, Colombia went in search of an equaliser, which came in the 82nd minute.

The goal came courtesy of a corner from James, which was headed to the far post by another substitute, Jhon Duran, where Diaz waited to fire the ball home from close range.

Although Colombia are third and expected to easily qualify for the 2026 World Cup, the point still meant a lot to Diaz, who is quickly becoming an icon in his country.

Konate was on the bench for all six of France’s matches at Euro 2024, but was given the chance to make his mark against Italy on Friday night.

Unfortunately, according to some, he did not seize that opportunity.

With Dayot Upamecano unavailable, Konate started alongside William Saliba and the duo failed to gel.

The French press was critical of the defensive duo after their 3-1 defeat, with The Parisian saying: “The Liverpool defender really didn’t play well enough.

“We felt he was hesitant in his placements, not always sure of himself, like in his defence for (Davide) Frattesi’s goal, where his marking was far too loose.”

This is no reflection on his last few performances for Liverpool, so hopefully it was just an isolated incident!

France 1-3 Italy

Alisson enjoyed a successful evening for Brazil, who were three points behind Colombia in the South American qualifiers for the World Cup.

The goalkeeper started for the Selecao in Curitiba and kept a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Ecuador. Real Madrid’s Rodrygo scored the winning goal after 30 minutes, after a pass from Lucas Paqueta.

Overall, Alisson played a comfortable game and had a good evening with the ball at his feet, playing four of his five long balls accurately and completing 21 of his 23 passes.

Mo Salah led Egypt to an impressive 3-0 victory over Cape Verde and although he didn’t score or get his teammates directly involved, he was always busy as the team’s talisman.

In this first match of the Pharoahs in the Africa Cup of Nations qualification they met Cape Verde, who reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations last year but were knocked out on penalties by South Africa.

Rami Rabia, Omar Marmoush and Ibrahim Adel were the goalscorers as Egypt cruised to victory in this encounter, with Salah playing the full 90 minutes.

After a great performance from Stoke, young Liverpool striker Koumas, on loan, made his competitive home debut for Wales.

In what was former Red Bellamy’s first match as manager, the coach brought on Koumas with 20 minutes remaining to attempt to score the winning goal against Turkiye.

The winner never came, but it was a good experience for the 18-year-old, who only made his international debut in June.

Fellow Liverpool loanee Owen Beckwho plays for Blackburn this season, had to wait for his debut as he was kept on the bench.

Wales’ next match is away to Montenegro in the Nations League on Monday.
