NFL to Change Tush Push for 2024 Season

The tush push will look a little different in the 2024-25 NFL season.

Amid talk of a possible ban on the tush push in 2024, the league decided to keep the rules in place, but with some tweaks.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, a rule clarification has changed the tush push. The “pushers” must now be at least three feet behind the quarterback before the ball is snapped. The new arrangement prevents an immediate push from the players behind the quarterback.

The tush push has become a hot topic in recent seasons. The Philadelphia Eagles have perfected the move, which sees quarterback Jalen Hurts stand under center with two players directly behind him.

After snapping the ball, Hurts is pushed forward by his teammates, which has led to success in most cases. The Eagles use the play in place of a quarterback sneak, usually on 4th and short or 4th and goal from near the goal line.

The seemingly unstoppable nature of the play led to a discussion about banning it from the league, but the league ultimately decided that this change would be enough to keep the play on for at least this season.

While the Eagles have perfected the tush push, they are not the only team to use it. No team has done it better than Philadelphia, as they have become somewhat of a face of the game.

The Eagles will look to perfect the new-look tush push on Friday night when they open their season against the Green Bay Packers in Brazil. It will be the league’s first-ever game in Brazil and the first Friday night game during the league’s opening weekend in more than 50 years.

Hurts and the Eagles will be looking to start their 2024 season strong after a disappointing end to the 2023 season. After starting the season 10-1, the Eagles lost five of their last six regular season games and were then dominated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round.

The Eagles will be hoping to start 1-0 on Friday as the Packers look to continue their run since the end of last season. The Packers closed the regular season with three straight wins and seven of their last 10. They then stunned the Dallas Cowboys during Wild Card weekend before narrowly losing to the San Francisco 49ers.
