Dick Cheney will vote for Kamala Harris in November, says his daughter Liz Cheney

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Former Vice President Dick Cheney, a lifelong Republican, will vote for Kamala Harris for president, his daughter Liz Cheney said Friday.

Liz Cheney, who herself endorsed Harris on Wednesday, made the announcement when asked about it by The Atlantic magazine’s Mark Leibovich during an interview onstage at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.

“Dick Cheney will vote for Kamala Harris,” Liz Cheney said to cheers from the crowd.

“Wow,” Leibovich replied.

Like his daughter, Dick Cheney has been an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, particularly during Liz Cheney’s failed 2022 re-election campaign.

In a campaign ad for Liz Cheney, when she was running for a fourth term as Wyoming’s only congresswoman, Dick Cheney called Trump a “coward” for trying “to steal the last election through lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters rejected him.”

The ad did little to help his daughter in a deep-red state once dear to the Cheney family but now firmly in Trump’s corner. By a 2-1 margin, Liz Cheney lost her Republican primary to Trump-backed attorney Harriet Hageman.

Notably, the former vice president was absent from Friday’s announcement of his endorsement.

Dick Cheney, 83, has rarely been seen in public in the past year or more. He has struggled with heart problems since he was 40 and underwent a heart transplant in 2012.

Cheney released a statement reaffirming his support for Harris, some of which is similar to the 2022 ad for his daughter.

“He can never be trusted with power again,” the statement said. “As citizens, we all have an obligation to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”

When asked for comment, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung replied: “Who is Liz Cheney?”

The campaign confirmed that Cheung was being sarcastic by also referencing a comment Liz Cheney posted online four years ago in which she called Harris a “radical liberal.”

Dick Cheney has been friends with Democrats for years, but has never supported one running for president.

Both Cheneys supported Trump in 2016, but after Liz Cheney criticized Trump’s foreign policy decisions and Trump criticized the “endless wars” in Afghanistan and Iraq that began when Dick Cheney was vice president, their support waned.

When one of the Cheneys endorsed Trump in 2020, they kept quiet about it. Meanwhile, their home state of Wyoming gave Trump his biggest victory that year.

In 2021, Liz Cheney’s vote to impeach Trump and her investigation into him over the 2021 U.S. Capitol riots made them incorrigible to Trump — and soon to most of the Republican Party.

There were exceptions. One was Cheney ally Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, a Republican Trump critic who endorsed Biden earlier this year and backed Harris at the Democratic National Convention in August.

Several other Republicans have come out in favor of Harris, while some, including Sen. Mitt Romney and former Vice President Mike Pence, say they will not vote for Trump.

Of these, Romney is the only one still in office. He is not running for re-election.
