Austin schools play Thursday to end long losing streak

UPDATE: Akins ends losing streak with win over Cedar Creek

Besides sharing a mascot, the Eagle, Akins and Cedar Creek will have something else in common when they meet Thursday night at Bastrop ISD Memorial Stadium.

Both programs are on a 26-game losing streak in regular season play, tied for the second-longest streak in the Austin area. (Eastside has lost 49 in a row.)

Each team last won in Week 5 of 2021. Akins defeated Austin High 20-18, while Cedar Creek defeated Elgin 14-6.

According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the longest losing streak in Texas high school football history is 80 games. Houston Northside, then known as Houston Jefferson Davis, played this game between 1985 and 1993.

More recently, Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis ended a 77-game losing streak in 2018.

One Eagles group will be excited around 10pm, while the other group will have to wait another week for a chance to end their winning streak.
