Spain played Serbia in the UEFA Nations League for the first time since winning Euro 2024 on Thursday, while Cristiano Ronaldo reached a new milestone by scoring his 900th goal in Portugal’s match against Croatia.

Eight players from Spain’s starting line-up for their Euro 2024 final victory over England were on the pitch for kick-off against Serbia in Belgrade almost two months ago.

Among them was Lamine Yamal, the Barcelona wonderkid who was one of the Spanish players who had no chance against home goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic.

Luis de la Fuente’s team are also the reigning Nations League champions, having won the last edition of the tournament last year.

They will now be hoping to secure their first win in Division A, Group 4 when they travel to Switzerland from Geneva on Sunday.

The Swiss lost 2-0 to Denmark on Thursday, with Patrick Dorgu and captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scoring goals in the closing stages for the home side in Copenhagen.

Switzerland finished the match with nine men, as Nico Elvedi and Granit Xhaka were sent off in the second half.

In Lisbon, Ronaldo’s 900th goal proved to be the decisive one as 2019 Nations League champions Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 in Group A1.

The 39-year-old Ronaldo had a disappointing Euro 2024, in which he failed to score. In the 34th minute at the Estadio da Luz, he managed to turn in a cross from Nuno Mendes to reach the milestone.

He appeared emotional as he celebrated the goal, his 131st in a Portuguese shirt. Half of his goals have come for Real Madrid, with the rest spread across his spells at Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United and current club Al-Nassr.

A goal from Diogo Dalot gave Portugal an early lead, but Ronaldo scored. An own goal from Dalot reduced the deficit before half-time.

Portugal now host Scotland, who lost 3-2 to Poland at Hampden Park, with the visitors claiming victory thanks to a 97th-minute penalty from Nicola Zalewski.

Poland led 2-0 after Sebastian Szymanski put them ahead early on and captain Robert Lewandowski added a penalty just before half-time.

However, Billy Gilmour scored again for League A newcomers Scotland just after half-time and Scott McTominay equalised before Roma’s Zalewski slotted his penalty past Angus Gunn deep into injury time.

Elsewhere, Slovakia and Northern Ireland won in League C, while Sweden, now coached by Jon Dahl Tomasson, beat Azerbaijan 3-1 in Baku, with Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak scoring twice.

History was made in League D when San Marino, the worst team in the world according to FIFA’s rankings, defeated Liechtenstein 1-0 to record their first ever competitive victory.

The small country of just 30,000 inhabitants, surrounded by Italy, went into the match at the San Marino stadium chasing a first victory since a friendly against Liechtenstein in 2004.

Liechtenstein had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half, but San Marino took advantage of a defensive error to score the winning goal in the 53rd minute through Nicko Sensoli.

He was 19 years old and not yet born when the team ranked 210th and last in the world last won a match.

France will play Italy in Paris on Friday.
