Rapper Rich Homie Quan, Who Performed at the MSU Rose Bowl, Dies at 34

Rich Homie Quan, whose hit “Type of Way” became the anthem of the 2013 Michigan State football team, died Thursday at his home in Atlanta at the age of 34. The cause of death is unknown.

Quan, a platinum-selling rapper, was featured in MSU’s postgame celebrations en route to a historic 13-1 season and became such a huge part of the team that the program flew the rapper to MSU’s 2014 Rose Bowl victory over Stanford. He partied with the team in the locker room after the game as his song blared over the speakers.

Fellow rapper Drake called “Type of Way” the “song of the summer.”

In November 2023, after the Spartans’ 10th win that season, Dantonio showed his team a personal video message from Rich Homie Quan, which players sent to their social media accounts to express their appreciation for his recognition.

“I wanted to give a shoutout to the best defense in the country, man,” he said in the video, telling MSU to show up and give Ohio State “some kind of feel” in the Big Ten championship game in two weeks. “Go for it, State, man.”
