Minecraft fans shocked by ‘horrible’ live-action trailer

Warner Bros. has unveiled the first trailer for its live-action Minecraft movie, much to the disappointment of gaming fans.

By Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, the upcoming film, titled A Minecraft Moviestarring an all-star cast including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (The color purple), Wednesday starring Emma Myers and Jennifer Coolidge.

The film is an adaptation of Mojang Studios’ best-selling video game, which was first released in 2009. Since then, the game has sold over 300 million copies and has nearly 140 million monthly active players.

A Minecraft Movie welcomes viewers to a world “where creativity isn’t just a means to creating, it’s essential to your survival!” reads an official description.

“Four misfits – Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks) – struggle with everyday problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.”

To return home, they must “master this world (and also protect it from evil creatures like Piglins and Zombies), while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert artisan, Steve (Black).”

Scenes in the first teaser, which was released on Wednesday (September 4), show the four adventurers entering the Overworld: a pink goat, a wolf that howls at night and an army of pigs.

While Hess retained the game’s iconic geometric block shape for the landscape and CGI animals, several fans lamented the fact that the film is not animated.

“This should have been animated not live action,” one person tweeted, while a second declared: “Oh this is going to be so bad.”

“IT LOOKS HORRIBLE,” agreed a third.

“Anyone could have guessed this, but this is clearly a film worked on by people whose kids play Minecraft, not by anyone who actually plays Minecraft,” argued another.

“I wasn’t expecting much from a live-action Minecraft movie, but this isn’t it,” one person added, while another noted, “This looks worse than I imagined a Minecraft movie would be.”

A Minecraft Movie is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 4, 2025.

This isn’t the first time that live-action adaptations of popular video games have received negative reactions.

The 2020 Sonic the hedgehog The film was forced to redesign its version of the eponymous star after fans criticized the initial design, which featured Sonic with eerily human eyes and teeth, long legs and a human-like torso.

Director Jeff Fowler thanked fans for their “support and criticism” and promised to redesign the character, but delayed the film’s release by three months.
