Michael Keaton to Use Real Last Name Douglas

Michael Keaton will probably not be known by his famous nickname for much longer.

The actor, 73, recently revealed that he hopes to return to his birth name, Michael John Douglas, after choosing not to use it in Hollywood for nearly 50 years. He noted that he couldn’t use his real last name because of the Screen Actor Guild’s rules against union members sharing the same professional name, which would require him to use the same name as a fellow actor Michael Douglas.

“I was flipping through — I can’t remember if it was a phone book,” Keaton recalled of choosing his stage name in an interview with People published on Wednesday, September 4. “I must have thought, ‘I don’t know, let me think of something.’ And I thought, ‘Oh, that sounds reasonable.’”

Keaton revealed that he planned to be credited as Michael Keaton Douglas in his 2023 film, Knox is leavingbut forgot to make the change.

“It completely slipped my mind. And I forgot to give them enough time to put it in and create that,” he explained before teasingly saying, “But that will happen.”

According to the outlet, Keaton will be referred to by his stage name in the upcoming film Beetlejuice Beetlejuicewhich hits theaters on Friday, September 6. In the sequel to the beloved 1988 film Beetle juiceKeaton reprises his role as the titular scheming demon who teams up with Winona RyderLydia Deetz to save her daughter (Jenna Ortega) from the crazy world of the afterlife.

In a video interview with People In a video released on Wednesday, Keaton admitted he was initially hesitant to take on the role of Beetlejuice, which has since become one of his most iconic characters.

“I told (director Tim Burton), ‘Give me the night. Give me the night to think about.’ And I called wardrobe and said, ‘Send me a rack of clothes from all different time periods,'” he shared. “I remember walking through this empty house and saying, ‘I want to take a walk.’ I don’t know. It just started evolving and I just said, ‘This could be fun. I have no idea if this is a thing.'”

He continued: “(Tim) knew what he was doing. He had it clearly in his head. He had the images of the sets and the world in his head. I just had to fit into it.”

Burton, 66, is returning to direct the sequel, which also stars Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe and Ortega, 21.

Keaton isn’t the first celebrity to go back to using his birth name. His former Birdman fellow player Emma Steen revealed that she started using her real first name, Emily, on set a few years ago. “For some reason I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily,'” she said The Hollywood Reporter in april.

Stone has also corrected Types of kindness director Yorgos Lanthimos about her birth name after a reporter called her Emily during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival in May. “My name is Emily, thank you,” the Oscar winner told the reporter, adding, “Very beautiful.”
