23 K-12 campuses have been victims of gun violence this year

Since the beginning of 2024, more than 20 schools in the country have experienced gun violence. A Georgia high school is the latest elementary and middle school campus to experience gun deaths and injuries.

Four people were killed and nine others were wounded in a shooting at Apalachee High School in the Atlanta suburb of Winder on Wednesday morning, the 23rd school shooting this year that has left people injured or dead, according to data from Education Week, a news organization that covers elementary and secondary education.

Education Week is just one of many organizations that collects data on gun violence in schools. Unlike the National Gun Violence Archive or the K-12 School Shooting Database, however, they only track incidents that meet certain criteria:

Reported incidents involving the discharge of a firearm
When a person, other than the suspect or perpetrator, suffers a gunshot wound as a result of the incident
Occurred on the school grounds of the primary or secondary school or on a school bus
Occurred during school hours or at a school sponsored event

With those factors in mind, there will be 38 school shootings in 2023, 15 more than in 2024 so far, including Wednesday’s shooting in Georgia.

Since Education Week began tracking school shootings in 2018, there have been approximately 205 school shootings.

How many school shootings will be reported in 2024?

The 22 school shootings in Georgia prior to Wednesday left seven dead and 29 wounded, according to Education Week’s count. Of the seven fatalities, three were students or children, while four were school staff members or adults.

Including Wednesday’s deaths and injuries, 49 people have been killed or injured as a result of a school shooting in 2024, with 11 dead and 38 injured.

Below is the total number of people, including children and adults, killed or injured in a school shooting since 2018:

2024: 49 people injured/killed in 23 school shootings
2023: 63 people injured/killed in 38 school shootings
2022: 140 people injured/killed in 51 school shootings
2021: 70 people killed/injured in 35 school shootings
2020: 12 people killed/injured in 10 school shootings
2019: 40 people killed/injured in 24 school shootings
2018: 114 people killed/injured 24 school shootings in 2018
Total: 488 people have been killed or injured in 205 school shootings since 2018

When and where did the other school shootings happen this year?

The list of school shootings reported so far in 2024 by Education Week includes incidents that occurred at K-12 schools across the country in which someone was killed or injured by a firearm.

While all of the reported incidents occurred at a K-12 school, not every recorded school shooting endangered the lives of students, teachers, or staff. Some of these incidents, including those reported in New Mexico or Oregon, occurred after school hours.
