The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a flash flood warning for an area encompassing southwestern Granville County until 10 p.m. Sept. 1.

At 6:49 p.m. Sunday, Doppler radar indicated that thunderstorms were producing heavy rain in the warned area, the National Weather Service said. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain had fallen at the time, and flash flooding was occurring or expected to begin soon.

According to the NWS, impacts could include life-threatening flooding of creeks and rivers, urban areas, highways, streets and tunnels.

Butner was mentioned as one of the locations where flooding was expected.

As a precaution, “turn around, don’t drown if you encounter flooded roads,” NWS said. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”

Report any observed flooding to local emergency services or police and ask them to pass this information on to the National Weather Service as soon as it is safe to do so.
