ESPN denies Disney is being inflexible in talks with DirecTV

The battle between DirecTV and Disney continues. As usual, both sides blame each other for the situation.

DirecTV has accused Disney of being inflexible in its attempts to force consumers to pay for content they don’t want. ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro has disputed that claim.

Via Sports Affairs DailyPitaro called the accusation “blatantly false” during an appearance on CNBC.

“I will tell you without any reservation that we have been incredibly flexible,” Pitaro said. “We have even offered them different flexible packages for their customers, starting with sports and broadcasting. That is part one, a package very similar to what we offered Venu. Number two, we have offered them an entertainment package, a package that would include our entertainment and children’s networks. And what we have received in response are basically hypotheses, and honestly we don’t even know if they can execute and deliver what they are specifically proposing to us.”

Another concern for DirecTV is the continued increase of Disney/ESPN content on streaming.

Last year, the battle between Disney and Charter Communications was ugly too. And then it ended on the first day of Monday night football. That’s probably where this is going. Bravado and bluster and bullshit — until a deal is struck to get ESPN and ABC back on DirecTV, just in time for Jets-49ers.
