Bachelorette Jenn Tran Speaks Out After Devin Strader Split

Jenn Tran is speaking out about her split from Devin Strader.

On The Bachelorette Season 21 finale on Tuesday, September 3, Jenn and Devin got engaged in Hawaii, but the couple later revealed that they had broken up. Jenn opened up about what happened in their relationship in the After the Final Rose special, revealing that Devin’s feelings changed almost immediately.

“Once we left Hawaii, things were just different,” she told host Jesse Palmer. “I felt like he was reneging on all the promises he made to me — he wanted to move somewhere together, and he wanted to have this future planned out, and he wanted to see each other all the time.”

Jenn explained that she stopped receiving calls and texts from Devin and that she was “getting confused.” Then one night, she got a call from her then-fiancé.

“He called me and basically broke off the engagement,” she said. “(He said) he didn’t love me anymore, that he didn’t feel the same way anymore and that something wasn’t right since the second proposal. He regretted his engagement.”

Jenn tried to understand how much pressure it can be to get engaged on a reality show and offered to work with Devin.

“(I said) ‘Let’s just be together. We don’t have to be engaged — I want a life with you, I don’t need a ring on my finger,'” she recalled telling him. “He had checked out. It wasn’t what he wanted anymore. And I fought for the relationship, tried to do everything I could to have empathy for him and try to make things work. He didn’t want to go to couples therapy. He didn’t want to fight for the relationship anymore.”

After that phone call, which Jenn says lasted 15 minutes, Devin never responded to her request again.

“We were engaged and in love and now you ignore my texts like I mean nothing to you,” she said.

As fans may recall, Jenn was left with her three suitors, Devin, Marcus, and Jonathan, for the fantasy suites. At the time, she revealed that her feelings for Devin were strong, saying that being with him “just feels right” and that he “makes me feel loved and supported.”

“I want to be in love with Devin and I think I’m really close to that,” the medical resident student added for the cameras.

Marcus, on the other hand, went into the nighttime date with the confession: “I’m not in love yet.”

“You deserve someone who is confident about you,” Marcus told Jenn. “I don’t know if I’m putting pressure on myself because of how quickly this process has gone or how quickly the end of this process is approaching, but it’s been hard for me to get to a point where I feel comfortable saying I’m in love.”

Jenn, however, had to be honest about her feelings, which were stronger than Marcus’s during their overnight dates. She told him, “I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that I’m in love with you.”

She and Jonathan also seemed to be in good spirits as they entered the fantasy suites, also using the “L” word.

“I felt like I could spend the rest of my life with this man,” Jenn said of the creative director.

“I have no doubt that I’m going to wake up tomorrow and be like, ‘Hey, this is my person. I’m so in love,'” he told the cameras at the time.

In the end, Jonathan was sent home and Marcus and Devin had to compete for the final rose, which fans now know went to Devin.

Jenn previously spoke to PEOPLE about her time on the dating show — where she starred as the lead actress with 25 suitors vying for a proposal at the end of the season. When asked about whether she would watch, Jenn was quick to respond.

“Are you kidding? I’m not going to watch The Best Two Months of My Life? Of course I am!” she said in a July issue. “I’m so excited for it to premiere. I think it’s so weird that this crazy journey happened, and I’m just so excited to be able to watch it again.”

Following the Men Tell All special, in which Jenn took the opportunity to stand up to Sam M. after she felt like he disrespected her during their dates, she told PEOPLE that she learned a lot from the experience, even teasing her about how she was doing leading up to the finale.

“I’ve grown so much on the journey that I’m a completely different person now than I was when I was there,” she explained. “I have this new sense of confidence and this empowerment, and when I look back on it all, there were definitely certain situations with (the boys) that I was really enlightened by in retrospect and I was like, ‘Oh, now I can pinpoint exactly what was wrong here and why I felt this way or why I didn’t stand up for myself.'”

“I don’t regret the whole journey,” she added later. “I think everything turned out exactly the way it was supposed to and I’m so happy about it. Along the way, all the mistakes I made and things like that, I own them and I’m happy to learn from them, so I don’t regret anything.”
