WNBA icon Sheryl Swoopes ends friendship over comments about Caitlin Clark

Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark is a sensation, breaking countless rookie records in the WNBA and developing herself into a generational talent after an incredible NCAA career.

Of course, this kind of success comes with critics from all sides. For Clark, that includes WNBA icon Sheryl Swoopes.

Swoopes recently received criticism for comments made toward Clark, including a call-out from a former friend.

In an appearance on “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” WNBA legend Nancy Lieberman recounted how a phone call with Swoopes about Clark seemingly ended their friendship.

Clark had just set the NCAA Division I record for most points scored by a player with 3,951. Swoopes incorrectly stated that Clark had been granted an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID pandemic.

Lieberman called Swoopes as a friend to correct the mistake, but things didn’t turn out as expected.

“Well, she got mad at me on the phone,” Lieberman said. “And I was like, ‘Sheryl, I’m not doing anything to hurt you. I’m just sharing.’ And so our relationship is really not going on at this point. I tried to talk to her at the Final Four, and she wouldn’t talk to me.”

“My life is going to be good or great with or without Sheryl Swoopes,” Lieberman continued, noting that she would rather have Swoopes around.

Swoopes quickly responded to Lieberman and Smith social media.

“Well, here you go! I get what you’re trying to do with your boy (Stephen A. Smith), but it’s not working,” Swoopes said. “You know very well what happened. And ditto… my life is good without you (and him) too. You wanna go there?”

While Swoopes has received a lot of attention online, she recently revealed that she has a conversation with Clark via text message and apologized to her.

“Hey Caitlin,” Swoopes said. “I wanted to reach out to you personally and say I made a mistake with what a year this has been for you. COVID is messing with me… LOL! I also have nothing but respect for you and your game and appreciate your skills. Congrats on all you’ve accomplished so far. Be blessed.”

“No worries,” Clark replied. “I really appreciate you reaching out to me and there are no hard feelings. I appreciate everything you’ve done for women (basketball) and inspiring girls like me and building the foundation and platform that we have today!”
