ORIGINALOne person was killed and several others, including a child, were injured in a campfire accident near Hibbing on Friday around 8:20 p.m., according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the report, emergency responders and law enforcement officers from around the area were called to the scene of the accident in the 12000 block of Jaranson Road in French Township, 20 miles north of Hibbing, after reports of three people burned when a fire broke out.

According to authorities, several families and friends had gathered to celebrate the holiday weekend and were preparing for an evening campfire when an unknown flammable liquid was used to start the fire. The exploding flames subsequently caused burns and inhalation injuries to eight people ranging in age from 14 to 60.

A 53-year-old Hibbing man died from his injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said. A child suffered severe burns and was airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital. Several other burn victims were transported by ambulance or private vehicle to area hospitals.

The accident remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.

The French Township Fire Department, EMS, Chisholm and Hibbing Ambulances, Life Link III and Guardian Flight assisted.
