Boston College 28, FSU 13: Flat offense, ineffective defense in second straight embarrassing loss for Florida State

A lackluster offense, an uninspired defense, confusing decisions by both the players and the rules: all were lessons learned from Florida State’s opening-season loss to Georgia Tech. And they all reared their ugly heads again in the Seminoles’ second straight early-season loss.

FSU’s offense looked outclassed from the start, failing to make an impact until the second quarter, when a short field led to a Florida State field goal. After the Seminoles’ defense managed to pull off another stop — a feat it accomplished quickly on Monday — the Seminoles’ drive stalled in the red zone on miscues by quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, who has quickly gone from lauded to embattled as the face of Florida State’s offensive struggles.

Uiagalelei, who at one point received boos and chants of “we want Brock (Glenn),” finished the day 21 of 42 for 272 yards, one touchdown and one interception — a devastating duck that was easily intercepted and returned to the 7-yard line to put Boston College up 28-6.

The Seminoles defense, which made a few stops to create chances, was more or less blown away as the Eagles racked up nearly 400 yards of offense — 271 of which were on the ground, with three players approaching 100 yards. Former Seminoles running back Treshaun Ward (who also played in the 61 yards and one receiving touchdown) recorded 77 yards, Kye Robichaux recorded 85 yards for one touchdown (catching a score himself) while quarterback Thomas Castellanos had 73 yards rushing and a score (along with 106 yards and two touchdowns passing).

Boston College existed 7-14 on third down for the game – for comparison, FSU was only 3-14.

The loss snaps the Seminoles’ five-game winning streak against Boston College and moves Florida State to 0-2 on the season, marking the third time they’ve opened a season with two losses under Norvell (2020, 2021). It’s the second time since 2017 that FSU has also started 0-2 as a top-ten team.
