5 Shots Fired at NY Caribbean Carnival Parade, Police Say ‘Not Random’

Police are investigating an incident in which five people were shot during the West Indian American Day parade in New York.

The shooting occurred on Monday, Sept. 2, as “thousands of people watched the parade” from a concrete barrier in Brooklyn, Patrol Chief John Chell said at a news conference.

Chell believes the shooting was an intentional act “by one person.” He added that there is no “active shooter or anything like that” for the community to be concerned about.

The patrol chief said the shooting would not derail plans for the day.

“The parade is underway. It will continue into later tonight,” Chell said. “We have multiple officers working very hard this weekend, working very hard today to keep this community safe and this parade safe. And we’ll be here into the early hours of the morning doing just that — working hard, keeping this community safe.”

Chell also called on the media and the public to help identify the person or persons involved in the Labor Day shooting.

“We realize there is an abundance of video footage from that angle, from that group,” he said, urging anyone with footage or related information to call 1 (800) 577-TIPS.

“We need that video. We’re going to get this resolved, but it’s going to take a lot of work,” he said before taking questions from reporters.

Speaking to media, the patrol chief said the shooting was “not random” and called it “an intentional act” that consisted of “one individual entering a group (and) firing his weapon.”

According to Chell, it is too early to say what caused the skirmish.

He added that it is not yet known whether the five people shot dead were the intended targets.

“We’re still working on that. When you fire a gun into a large crowd, we have to figure out who was targeted and who wasn’t. We don’t know that yet,” Chell said.

New York’s ABC 13 reported that the victims were four men and one woman. Two were in critical condition and three had non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was described as a man 6 feet 3 inches to 6 feet 3 inches tall, of slim build, wearing a black bandana and a brown shirt and fled the scene of the shooting heading west on Eastern Parkway toward Classon Avenue, the news station reported, citing police.
