Reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff knocked out in round of 16

Coco Gauff will want to forget the 2024 US Open as quickly as possible.

The reigning champion failed to advance beyond the round of 16 on Sunday afternoon, losing to compatriot Emma Navarro 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Navarro took care of business in the first set, and the second was a back-and-forth battle early on. With the set tied at 3-3, Navarro broke Gauff’s serve to take a 4-3 lead, putting Gauff on thin ice.

But it wasn’t thin enough as Gauff returned the favor by breaking Navarro’s serve. Gauff then took a 5-4 lead and broke Navarro again to take the match to a third set.

Gauff won the first game, with all signs of momentum on her side. But it didn’t continue as Navarro took the next three games. The two then traded games, giving Navarro a 5-3 lead with Gauff serving, but that wasn’t much of an advantage for the reigning champion, who double-faulted three times to help Navarro advance to the quarterfinals.

Gauff had 19 double faults in the match, 11 of which came in the final set. After her last, she threw her racket angrily to the ground.

It is the second straight Grand Slam that she has lost in the round of 16, after reaching at least the semifinals in her previous three tournaments. It is also the sixth consecutive year that the reigning champion has failed to reach the quarterfinals. No reigning champion has reached the semifinals since Serena Williams in 2015.

Navarro will face Spain’s Paula Badosa again on Tuesday. It will be her second quarterfinal in a row in a banner year for the 23-year-old, who until this year had never advanced beyond the second round of a Grand Slam.

This year she reached at least the round of 16 at every Grand Slam tournament, with her best performance being the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in July.
