Pregnant para-archer Jodie Grinham beat her ParalympicsGB teammate and reigning champion Phoebe Paterson Pine to win bronze in the women’s individual competition.

Grinham’s bronze in Paris is her first individual Paralympic medal, after winning silver in the mixed team competition in Rio in 2016.

Trailing by two points after the fourth end, Haverfordwest’s Grinham, who is seven months pregnant, scored 29 points in the fifth and final end.

Paterson Pine could not match this number. He scored 26 points and lost the tie with 142-141.

“I’m really proud of myself. I’ve had a hard time and it hasn’t been easy,” said Grinham, 31, who was “in and out of hospital” in Paris this week.

“But as long as I’m healthy and the baby is healthy, I knew we could compete. I knew if I shot the best I could, I would come back with a medal.

“The baby hasn’t stopped kicking, it’s almost like the baby is saying ‘what’s going on, it’s really loud, mommy what are you doing?’. But it’s a nice reminder of the support bubble I have in my belly.”

Grinham will be back in action on Monday at the mixed team complex with Nathan MacQueen.
