    STILLWATER — The 2024 football season has finally begun for the Oklahoma State football team, but the Cowboys won’t be starting this season quietly.

    OSU begins with an early test against two-time reigning FCS champion South Dakota State at 1 p.m. Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium.

    While the Cowboys have a shot at the Heisman Trophy with running back Ollie Gordon II, the Jackrabbits have the best player at the FCS level in quarterback Mark Gronowski, who won the Walter Payton Award last year.

    This is the first meeting between the Cowboys and Jackrabbits.

    On a third-and-8 pass from South Dakota State’s Mark Gronowski, OSU cornerback Korie Black dove in front of the intended receiver for the Pokes’ first interception of the season.

    OSU takes a 3-0 lead and takes over at SDSU’s 47-yard line.

    Oklahoma State got many of its playmakers involved in its first offense of the season, but it finished with a 42-yard field goal by new placekicker Logan Ward that gave the Cowboys a 3-0 lead with 8:15 left.

    Brennan Presley moved into third place on OSU’s all-time reception list with three catches on the drive with 228 in his career, passing James Washington, who had 226 in his career.

    Ollie Gordon II had two carries for 13 yards on the opening drive.

    OSU gave South Dakota State a chance to reach midfield on its first attack, but a fourth attempt failed.

    OSU receiver Brennan Presley has three catches, which puts him third on the Cowboys’ all-time receptions list. Presley has 228 catches. He passed James Washington, who has 226. Next up (not today, I’d wager): Justin Blackmon, who has 253 receptions.

    The NCAA has banned the Oklahoma State football team from placing a sticker with a QR code on its football helmets. The sticker would link fans to the team’s public name, image and likeness fund, which benefits all players on the roster.

    OSU interprets the QR code stickers as institutional stickers permitted under NCAA bylaws, but the NCAA says the QR code are advertising and/or commercial logos.

    “We disagree with the interpretation of the rule, but we will adhere to it and work with the appropriate groups to bring about the necessary change,” said OSU athletic director Chad Weiberg. “Our staff came up with an innovative concept to increase the NIL value of our student-athletes, but ultimately it is just the latest example of how college sports is evolving faster than the rulebook.”

    Oklahoma State will be without several reserves at linebacker and receiver in its season opener against South Dakota State on Saturday.

    Reserve middle linebacker Justin Wright, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, is out and his availability could be in question for the next few weeks, based on OSU radio voice Dave Hunziker’s pregame injury report.

    In addition, the Cowboys are missing two reserve receivers: Da’Wain Lofton, a transfer from Virginia Tech, and redshirt freshman Jalen Pope.

    The Jackrabbits can’t keep up with Oklahoma State superstar Ollie Gordon II, who breaks the 200-yard mark in the season opener and begins his Heisman Trophy campaign with authority. But the SDSU offense should do enough to keep this game interesting into the fourth quarter.
