Matthew Gaudreau’s wife Madeline is expecting their first child after his sudden death

Madeline Gaudreau, the wife of Matthew Gaudreau, who tragically died on Thursday, August 29, while riding his bike with his brother Johnny, is pregnant with the couple’s first child.

A baby registry listing Madeline and Matthew’s names lists the due date as December 31, 2024, and a group photo from Katie Gaudreau’s bachelorette weekend shared on August 4 shows Madeline showing off her baby bump.

On Friday, August 30, a verified GoFundMe page was set up to support Madeline and the baby, who will be named Tripp.

“We are heartbroken to share the devastating news that the Gaudreau family has suffered a tragic and unimaginable loss. On August 29, 2024, a car accident took the lives of Matthew and his brother John,” the GoFundMe page reads.

“During this unimaginably difficult time, we come together to support Matthew’s wife Madeline and their growing baby Tripp, and to help ease some of the financial burdens they are now facing. Your support will give them time off from work to grieve and heal as a family.”

Additionally, a statement provided to WBZ-TV reporter Dan Roche from the brothers’ uncle, Jim Gaudreau, said the family is mourning the loss of “two fathers.”

“Last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers, two sons and brothers-in-law, two nephews, two cousins, two family members, two teammates, two friends, but they were truly two great people,” the family’s statement, provided by Jim, said.

“We want everyone to know that we receive your messages of love and support and we appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers. We ask for your continued respect and privacy during this very difficult time of grief,” the statement continued.

Matthew and Johnny, who played professional hockey for the Columbus Blue Jackets, were killed around 8 p.m. Thursday in New Jersey when a driver believed to be under the influence of alcohol fatally struck both brothers, New Jersey State Police told PEOPLE.

Sean M. Higgins was identified by authorities as the driver. Higgins was arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, police said.

Johnny is survived by his wife Meredith and their two children: daughter Noa, who will be 2 in October, and son Johnny, 7 months old.

The brothers were in New Jersey preparing for their sister’s wedding, scheduled for Aug. 30, the wedding website said. Both brothers were listed as groomsmen for the ceremony.

According to TMZ, the ceremony venue confirmed that the wedding has been canceled due to the tragedy.

In a statement released by the Blue Jackets, the team said it was “shocked and devastated” by the tragic news. “We will miss him terribly and are doing everything we can to support his family and each other during this tragedy. At this time, we ask for prayers for the Gaudreau family and that their privacy be respected as they grieve,” the statement read.
