The Advocate writers predict the outcome of No. 13 LSU’s season opener against No. 23 Southern California on Sunday night in Las Vegas:

LSU 35, USC 30

As bad as LSU’s defense was last year, USC’s was even worse. The Trojans allowed 6.10 yards per play and 34.4 points per game. Their rush defense was particularly leaky, and the Tigers can take advantage of that. While both defenses may have improved somewhat, LSU’s offensive line is the biggest strength of either team in this game. It will make the difference.

LSU should win this game. The good news for the Tigers is that they should have an advantage on both sides of the line of scrimmage. LSU’s offensive line controls the pace of the game and the defensive front puts just enough pressure on USC to force a few late stops that give the No. 13 Tigers an elusive season-opener victory.

I had second thoughts when my score was about nine points below the over/under. It’s not that I have overwhelming confidence in either team’s defense, but both offenses will have a few empty possessions with new quarterbacks running the show. Ultimately, LSU’s ability to run the ball, control the clock and stop the run just enough will break the Tigers’ four-game slump in the season openers.

LSU and USC are on similar paths; both teams have third-year head coaches, new quarterbacks and new defensive schemes. However, the Tigers are still the more talented team, having outpaced the Trojans in recent years — even if USC has had the slight edge in the transfer portal. That talent gap will be on display in Las Vegas.
