Carlos Alcaraz eliminated at US Open by Botic van de Zandschulp

If Carlos Alcaraz was surprised by the opposition he faced in the first round, he must be shocked now.

The 2022 US Open winner, who is seen as the world’s next great tennis star and is the favorite in Flushing, was knocked out in stunning fashion on Thursday evening by the unseeded Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp.

The third-seeded player was overwhelmed by van de Zandschulp, who entered this year’s match with a singles record of 12-18. He had an overall record of 5-13 against top-10 players and had only advanced past the fourth round of a Grand Slam once, when he reached the quarterfinals of the 2021 US Open.

The 28-year-old from Zandschulp has not won more than two singles matches at any Grand Slam in the past two years.

Now he is in the third round in Queens, after the biggest win of his career, and will then face Britain’s Jack Draper, number 25.
