Colorado will play one of the best FCS opponents you can face North Dakota State will open tonight in Boulder. Deion Sanders knows how challenging it will be with the history of their program.

Sanders praised the Bison during his coaches show before their opener against each other. He sees a record of years of success that tells him everything he needs to know about NDSU. It even reminds him of some of the teams he coached at the prep level in Texas.

“They’re a winning tradition of a school that plays football,” Sanders said. “It’s almost like — I’m trying to give you an analogy. Like, if you’re playing a high school football game in Texas and you show up and you don’t see a track around the field? You’re getting ready to play some football. If you see a track around the field, they’re serious, but they’re not serious. If you go there and you don’t see a track around the field and it’s just a football field? You better buckle up.”

“North Dakota State is one of those schools that has a tradition of winning,” Sanders said. “They have a commitment to excellence.”

North Dakota State won eight national titles as part of DII. In 2004, they jumped to the FCS level. Since then, the Bisons have won as many as any other program in the country at nearly every level, especially since the early 2010s.

In the 13 seasons since 2011, NDSU has won nine national titles, including a fifth-peat from 2011 to 2015 and a three-peat from 2017 to 2019, making it four in five years after winning their last in 2021. That was a 9-0 record in FCS Championship appearances before losing their first in 2022 to State of South Dakota.

In that 13-year span, North Dakota State is 172-19 (.901) overall, with three undefeated finishes in 2013, 2018 and 2019.

While still a division lower, this is a significant test for Colorado to begin with, and it’s a game that Coach Prime knows his Buffaloes will have to go out and win if they want an opening win.

“They’re detailed. They’re not going to defeat themselves,” Sanders said. “We’re going to have to defeat them. They’re not going to defeat themselves.”

“We’ve gone through a multitude of scenarios and things that we want to happen and we’re preparing for anything,” Sanders said.

Colorado could be busy tonight as they kick off with North Dakota State. They have pulled off surprises before and could do so again if the Buffaloes don’t stake their claim from the start.
