New Retro Barbie ‘Dumb Phone’ Keeps Teens Off Social Media

  • The mobile phone maker behind Nokia has teamed up with Mattel to create a ‘dumb phone’ in the shape of Barbie.
  • The phone does not offer access to the internet or social media and is therefore mainly intended for teenagers who want to limit their screen time.
  • The price is £99 ($130) and will be available for purchase in the US soon.

Human Mobile Devices, the company behind Nokia phones, has teamed up with toy maker Mattel to launch a “dumb phone” shaped like Barbie.

According to a press release announcing the device, the retro flip phone has a camera, alarm, MP3 player, and texting and calling capabilities, but no access to the internet or social media apps.

The focus is on simplicity and living in the real world, without the distractions of the internet.

The The release of the Barbie phone comes as a Gen Z is trading in their smartphones for slimmed-down “dumb phones” to limit screen time.

The launch comes as children are returning to school, with more and more schools and school boards deciding to ban smartphones in schools to some extent.

Parents, educators, politicians and even mobile phone providers are critical of the use of smartphones by young people.

The new Barbie phone is currently available in the UK for £99 ($130) and will be available in the US soon.

It comes with fun accessories, such as a Barbie-style beaded string, attachable charms and stickers.
