The online countdown that Linkin Park launched last weekend is running again.

On Saturday (August 24), the nu metal stars began a 100-hour countdown on their website and social media channels, with many fans hoping the breaking news would be a band reunion.

Instead, as this evening (August 28) ended, the clock started counting up again, possibly to 100 hours again. People are a little perplexed.

“????/ WHAT” responded prominent influencer Nik Nocturnal when Linkin Park posted footage of the clock restarting on X (formerly Twitter). “Why is it counting weird man?” asked another user, his annoyance almost palpable.

Another grumbled: “Okay, if you’ve announced an announcement date… but you only actually reveal an actual announcement date… this is the dumbest, most unkind reveal strategy ever.”

Linkin Park officially disbanded shortly after frontman Chester Bennington committed suicide in July 2017 at age 41. The band played a tribute to the late singer the following October, but have not performed live since.

Rumors of a comeback began in April, when Orgy frontman Jay Gordon, a former collaborator, said in an interview that Linkin Park would be reuniting with a female vocalist to replace Bennington. He later retracted his claims. Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee denied that she was the singer in question.

A month later, Billboard reported that Linkin Park hopes to return for a tour and festival shows in 2025. A source told the publication that the reunion would include a female vocalist.

Speculation of a reunion was reignited when Linkin Park began their countdown. US festival Welcome To Rockville shared the first social media post on their Instagram stories, raising hopes that the band will be back to play live in 2025. Vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Mike Shinoda had previously said Revolver that if Linkin Park were to return, the announcement would be posted on their website.

“If there’s an announcement that needs to be made, it’s going to be on LinkinPark.com,” he said. “If you hear it from someone else, you can trust that information as much as you want.

Fans also speculated that the band would return with Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley on vocals, as the singer/guitarist had his own announcement set for today. However, Whibley quickly denied the rumors and postponed his announcement, which has to do with his upcoming memoir Walking Disaster: My Life Through Heaven and Helluntil the end of the week.

Linkin Park released a compilation album, Papercuts (Single Collection: 2000–2023)in april.
