Is there an outage at AT&T? How do you check if your phone is in SOS mode?

If you look at your phone and see that it is only in SOS mode, chances are it is not your fault.

SOS and SOS only on iPhones are modes that are activated when your phone loses its connection to the cellular network. One of the most common ways this can happen is, of course, an outage with your wireless service provider.

AT&T currently has approximately 4,600 user reports of outages in the United States as of this article’s publication, according to Downdetector, with more reports coming in every minute. The exact extent of the current outage is unclear.

Here’s how to check for outages at AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile.

Why does my iPhone show SOS or just SOS?

When iPhones aren’t connected to a cellular network, they typically alert the user by displaying an indication in the phone’s status bar. These notifications usually say “No Service” or “Searching,” but your phone may also say “SOS” or “SOS Only.”

When your phone goes into SOS mode, it can still make emergency calls. When you make an emergency call with your iPhone, it automatically dials your local emergency number and shares your location information with emergency services.

Additionally, you can add emergency contacts under your phone’s Medical ID options in settings. If you add an emergency contact, that person will be notified of your location via text message after an emergency call.

How to get your phone out of SOS mode

In many cases, if your phone is in SOS mode, external circumstances beyond your control may be responsible. However, there are a number of troubleshooting steps that you can take yourself:

  • Make sure you are in an area with mobile network coverage
  • Turn your mobile data off and then back on:
    • Go to settings
    • Turn mobile data off and on again
  • If you travel internationally, make sure your phone is set up for data roaming:
    • Go to settings
    • Tap on mobile
    • Mobile data options
    • Turn data roaming on or off
  • Try restarting your device
  • Please check your provider settings for an update
    • Make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi or a mobile network
    • Open Settings and navigate to General > About. If an update is available, you will see it here
  • Turn your cell phone line off and on again
    • Open Settings
    • Tap on Mobile and see if your mobile line is enabled
    • Can’t see a mobile line in settings? Set up an eSim or re-insert your physical SIM card
  • Reset your network settings
    • Open Settings
    • Tap General > Transfer or reset (device) > Reset > Reset network settings
    • Remark:This will reset your Wi-Fi networks and passwords, mobile settings, VPN and APN settings that you used previously
  • Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS
    • Connect your device to the power supply and connect to Wi-Fi
    • Go to Settings > General and then tap ‘Software Update’
    • Select the update you want to install
  • Please contact your mobile provider
    • If all else fails, contact your carrier to see if there are any outages in your area, verify that your account is active and in good standing, and verify that your device is not blocked from receiving cellular service.

How do I enable WiFi calling?

Here’s how to turn on Wi-Fi calling on your iPhone:

  • Navigate to settings
  • Tap Phone
  • Then tap on Wi-Fi Calling

According to Apple, you may need to enter or confirm your address for emergency services.

Once Wi-Fi calling is available, you’ll see “Wi-Fi” in the status bar in Control Center.

When cellular service is available, your iPhone will use it for emergency calls. If you turn on Wi-Fi Calling and cellular service is not available, emergency calls can use Wi-Fi Calling.

Your device’s location may be used to support response when you post a message.
